Data Collection

How Data Collection Improves Your Model

Lookout+ is currently Learning, which means the detection models are still being tuned for real-world maritime conditions. Because every environment, vessel, sensor setup, and operational profile is different, your installation may experience imperfect or inconsistent performance at first.

To help Lookout+ adapt to your scenario, we rely on real mission data.

How to Contribute Data

Lookout+ includes a built-in Record feature. When enabled, it captures video frames, metadata, detections, and navigation context. This information is essential for improving model performance in your specific operating environment.

You can help us refine Lookout+ by:

  • Clicking "Record" during normal operations.
  • Collecting representative data — various lighting, sea states, traffic conditions, etc.
  • Letting the system run for a sufficient amount of time in your typical mission profiles.

The more diverse and high-quality the recorded data, the better the resulting model.

What Happens After You Record

Once you've collected enough data:

  1. We review the dataset to ensure quality and coverage.
  2. We retrain and fine-tune a new version of the Lookout+ model using your data (combined with our global training set).
  3. You receive an updated model that is optimized for the conditions your vessel actually sees.

This process typically results in significantly better detection performance, reduced false positives, and improved robustness in challenging conditions.

Why We Do This

Maritime environments vary dramatically across:

  • Weather and sea states
  • Camera types and mounting angles
  • Vessel speeds and manoeuvres
  • Local traffic patterns
  • Lighting, reflections, and clutter
  • Wildlife and regional markers

A one-size-fits-all model can't capture all these nuances — but your data can.

With your help, Lookout+ becomes safer, smarter, and more reliable for your missions and the missions of others.
